Hi all,
I just removed the password wall while the site was in alpha, so I’d like to welcome one and all to the public, live (but still very much beta!) version of Invisible College! 🙂
Last academic year, I used YouTube live streaming to teach revision webinars to my GCSE and AS/A2 sciences students and it seemed very well received by the students in general, and I’m pleased to congratulate my ex-year 11 and year 13 students at Acland Burghley School on their recent results! Â Well done guys!
After the seeming success of doing interventions with students and revision via YouTube streaming last year, over the summer I thought I’d build something more effective and engaging for this year’s science students at Acland Burghley and LaSWAP.
Over the course of this week I’ll be doing a series of virtual lessons where we’ll be exploring the ways in which students and teachers can interact with each other in a virtual classroom. These are open to any students at Acland Burghley or LaSWAP studying physics, biology or chemistry at GCSE or AS/A2 level.
The website is still very much in development, but I think it will still prove useful to our more motivated students. It’s a project I started late last year, and while it’s pretty functional and feature rich (including its own social network, interactive course modules and learning activities etc.) it won’t be a ‘finished product’ for at least a couple of years.
However, I’m hoping it will help any students who are interested in joining the project in its infancy regardless, as well as help me develop as a teacher. I hope other teachers who are interested in teaching their subjects using e-learning methods or live online will get involved also.
After this week’s series of introductory virtual lessons, starting next week there will be a weekly live teaching event for each science subject at GCSE and AS/A2 level (please see the Live Events Calendar on the www.invisible-college.com website). By the end of this week there will be lesson titles and learning objectives posted for all scheduled lessons (Mon-Weds) on the Invisible College Live Events Calendar, so please regularly check for updates.
I’ve been using this platorm to deliver private tuition and other private academic coaching services online since early this summer, and will continue to offer private tuition at heavily discounted rates to subscribers via regular discount codes etc., but I’m making access to it free of charge for Acland Burghley students and LaSWAP consortium students for this academic year to support my ‘brick and mortar’ students and department.
Please email me or see me if you are interested, and I can give you further instructions on how to create an account and attend this week’s live teaching sessions.
