Notice of server and code updates over the next 48 hours

New revision resources for ABS students

Hi everyone,

It’s been a while since I updated you all here, because I’ve been hard at work creating some new unique resources for you all on the website.

These include four new interactive courses which cover the whole content of advanced level biology, GCSE physics, GCSE chemistry, and GCSE biology.

While these courses are under construction, I’ve given exclusive access to these courses to GCSE and advanced level students attending Acland Burghley school and the LaSWAP consortium of schools; when the courses are complete these courses will be published and made available to private students.

These courses include my new advanced quizzes – these quizzes employ advanced machine learning algorithms hosted on external server neural network which actively analyse student learning behaviours on the website as well as performance on previous quizzes to decide which questions each student is presented with on successive attempts at each quiz, in effect learning how each student learns to better tailor their experience of the interactive activities on the website and accelerate their learning.

These advanced quizzes also contain detailed feedback and explanations on each question to aid students in their learning and revision.

I believe these advanced quizzes are the most detailed, rigorous and powerful study/revision resources found anywhere online for GCSE and advanced level science students, and over the course of this academic year I’m aiming to complete all of the necessary quizzes and other interactive content to fully cover all three sciences at GCSE and biology at advanced level. I’m going to try to cover advanced level chemistry and physics during the the next academic year.

So far, the following lessons in the following courses contain both these advanced self marking and self differentiating quizzes, as well as other interactive and unique learning resources:

I will update you all here on a weekly basis to let you know about new resources available in new lessons.

I will also create a demo page shortly containing some demo quizzes for students who do not have access to these courses, to give prospective students an idea of what to expect when these courses are complete by the end of this academic year.

Coming Soon – Interactive Videos!

Hi everyone,

I hope your exams went well, and you’re all looking forward to your summer break.

Over the summer holiday I’ll be making some major improvements to the website.  One such update will be to start converting all the teaching videos from being ordinary videos (such as those found on YouTube) to being fully interactive videos, containing embedded quiz questions and other interactive content!

To get a sense of what’s in store, I’ve updated the video of one of the recent GCSE Physics revision webinars to contain bookmarks and interactive questions of various kinds, with a summary page at the end so you can see how you’ve done after watching the video and completing all the exercises embedded in it.

From September, all the teaching videos on Invisible College will be interactive (and I’ll be updating the existing teaching videos to make them interactive too).

Upcoming GCSE and A-Level Exam Revision Webinars!

Hi everyone,

I trust you all had a restful and fun Easter holiday.

It’s that time of year again for students in year 11 and year 13 – the lead up to the final exams!

For those of you revising for GCSE’s, it’s even more important than ever before to prepare effectively for exams since 100% of your final grade is dependent on your performance in these exams.

Following the success of the YouTbe revision webinars I did last year (for last year’s GCSE and A-Level students), I’ve now scheduled 16 upcoming live revision webinars!

These will cover the full course content for AQA GCSE Physics (8 Webinars) and AQA A-Level Biology (8 Webinars), and allow you to cover everything in your course prior to the final exams in May/June.

There are only 100 seats available at each of these webinars, and most of these are reserved for members who are students at Acland Burghley School and the LaSWAP consortium of schools (who do not need to book tickets), so please book ASAP to avoid disappointment!  (Please note that the YouTube livestreams of these events are free but non-interactive, and do not provide the revison and study materials for the sessions)

GCSE Physics Revision Webinars

This is a series of 8 webinars designed to cover/revise the full content of GCSE Physics in time for the upcoming 2018 final exams!

These revision webinars are most suitable for students studying AQA (new spec) 9-1 Physics with upcoming final exams in May/June 2018 (but suitable for all spec’s/exam boards)

Each webinar will be from two to three hours long (depending on student questions and interactions, time taken for students to complete interactive exercises duing webinar, depth/breadth of discussion, etc.), and is designed to cover the entire content of the GCSE specification on specific topics while allowing students to ask questions, solve problems, and take part in interactive exercises.

This is a series of 8 revision webinars designed to cover/revise the full content of AQA Advanced Level Biology in time for the upcoming 2018 final exams!

December Update

Hi everyone.

As many of you know, I’ve postponed many of the scheduled live lessons over the last few weeks due to having to attend physiotherapy sessions for a back injury.

However, I’ve been hard at work publishing many new course modules, most of which are for Advanced Level Biology but also many for GCSE physics, biology and chemistry. 

All the interactive course modules now have the lesson PowerPoint slides on the pages for each lesson, for you to use as revision resources.  You can also download the lesson PowerPoints to use offline.

I’ve started to include many homework assignments and interactive quizzes for the lessons in the interactive course modules.

For example, the module on Advanced Level Cell Biology now has interactive quizzes and homework assignments for all its lessons, as well as a challenging 80 minute end-of-course exam!

I’ll be adding more interactive quizzes, homework assignments, and lesson videos to all the published course modules over the the holidays, so by January all the lessons will have lesson videos as well.

Please do leave comments and suggestions, which are always welcome.

I’ll also update the calendar with the upcoming scheduled lessons from the beginning of next term.

Welcome to Invisible College version 1.7!

Hi everyone,

I hope you all had an enjoyable and refreshing half-term break.

I’ve made several updates to the website and added a bunch of new features, and I give a brief overview of these in this video.  I’ve also added a number of interactive course modules, so please watch this video for details and keep an eye on your emails for discount codes for these course modules.

I’ll be posting a short video every week here on the blog from now on to keep you all updated – please make sure you’ve also signed up to our email newsletter to be kept up to date with new discount codes and exclusive offers!

Server Upgrades to Boost Site Performance

Hi everyone,

I’m upgrading the server hardware and doing some server-side code optimisations over the course of the next few days which will massively improve this website’s speed and performance for users.  This may mean that there may be some occasions when certain parts of the site appear not to be accessible or seem to not work as they should.  Please bear with me while these upgrades and optimisations are completed, and hopefully your experience of using the site will be noticeably improved.

Other than just improving the general performance of the site for users, these upgrades are going to make possible the new functions of the site which I’m currently working on, which will be released in version 1.7.0 at the end of October.

Last week’s lesson recordings now available in the private forums!

Hi everyone,

Just so you know, the recordings of the live scheduled lessons from this week are now available for registered members to view in the private user forums.

At the end of each week, I’ll be posting the lesson recordings from that week to the forums to allow other students who didn’t attend the live lessons to use the recordings for their studies and revision.

Please note that the electronic learning resources for the live lessons are ONLY available to students who attended these lessons – while the recordings are made available to all registered users, you must attend the live lessons to be given access to the other resources for each lesson (PowerPoints, revision notes, whiteboard notes, worksheets, exam questions etc.)

While you will earn InvisiCoins for attending and taking part in live virtual lessons, you can also earn InvisiCoins for watching an entire video recording of a lesson (even if you didn’t attend the live lesson)! 

You can also earn more InvisiCoins if a user asks a question about one of the topics covered in a video and you respond to their question in the forum topic by writing a post – if that user finds your answer helpful and ‘likes’ your post, you earn InvisiCoins!

I hope you find these useful.  If you have any questions about any of the topics  covered in the recording of a lesson, please post your questions in the forum topic containing the video recording of that lesson, and I’ll get back to you with answers.

Take the InvisiCoin Challenge!

Hi everyone,

I’m going to be posting regular InvisiCoin challenges here for our student members to take part in.   These challenges are completely voluntary, but they are a great way to start earning InvisiCoins!

For each challenge, there is a deadline (countdown timer) for students to upload their work.  After the time is up, the entries will either be marked by a teacher OR will be posted in the private student forums for students to vote on.

As time goes on, all students in each year group will have access to a large range of the best work to use as revision and study resources, and over the course of the year they’ll cover almost every topic for each subject 🙂

There are InvisiCoin prizes for first, second and third place for each challenge.

You should write your essay in continuous prose. Your essay will be marked for its scientific accuracy. It will also be marked for your selection of relevant material from different parts of your exam board specification and for the quality of your written communication. The maximum number of marks that can be awarded for Scientific Content is 16, for Breadth of knowledge is 3, for Relevance is 3, and for QWC is 3 - this makes a total of 25 marks available for this essay.

Next week’s lessons

Hi everyone,

I just updated the live teaching events calendar with lesson titles and learning objectives for all of the live virtual lessons are be teaching next week between Monday to Wednesday for GCSE and AS/A2 students of physics, chemistry and biology.

I’ve highlighted these lessons in blue on the live teaching events calendar for next week.

Students at Acland Burghley school and LaSWAP can book tickets and attend these virtual lessons free of charge using coupon codes which I’ll send out to them by email shortly.

Next week sessions will all be done in the fully interactive meeting format, where any users who would like to enable their web cam and microphone will be able to be seen and heard by all other users. You can also attend without using microphone and web cam if you wish.

If you wish to fully interact in the virtual classroom by using your web cam and microphone please ensure that you are properly prepared for your lesson before it begins:

  • A webcam (so you can be seen by your teacher and other students)
  • A microphone (so you can be heard by other students)
  • Headphones (so you can hear your teacher and other students, and also because if you listen to the audio of this event through speakers you will cause feedback!  Please use headphones or DO NOT ATTEND!)
  • A quiet place to work for an hour, where anyone else who may come in knows you are not to be disturbed.  Your work area must have good lighting, but don’t sit with your back to window (you’ll appear as a silhouette to everyone else).
  • Preferably a fast broadband connection – the virtual classrooms display in HD, so the faster your internet connection is the better the quality of audio and video you’ll get
  • A desktop or laptop computer is best, but you can use a tablet or smartphone too
  • Make sure your device doesn’t have any documents or images open or on the desktop which you don’t want others to see or violates our terms of service and student community rules; use your common sense please.  You may be sharing your screen with the class at any time, so make sure both your physical environment and your device are free of anything private or inappropriate.

Please respect others, follow the student community rules and enjoy your lesson.  Any inappropriate behaviour will lead to immediate ban and expulsion of that student from all future Invisible College services and events.

Please ensure that you book your tickets at least 24 hours in advance to give me time to send you the registration link to allow you to register and receive your unique link and password to join the session. If you book your ticket any less than 24 hours in advance of the session you wish to attend you may not receive your unique link and password in time to attend the meeting!

Finally, there are InvisiCoin rewards for attending next weeks lessons:

  • 20IC for each session you attend as a ’view only’ participant (no webcam or mic),
  • 40IC for each session you attend where you enable only your mic (no webcam),
  • 80 IC for each session you attend where you participate in audio/video using your webcam and mic.
